Billingshurst is a small town on the Roman Stane Street, at the junction of the A29 and A272 which has had seen considerable recent development and the benefit of a bypass. However many old houses remain in the centre, including a 16thC half timbered inn.

The name is thought to derive from either the Roman general Belinus, or the Saxon tribe of Billings.

The Unitarian chapel dating from 1754 is one of the oldest of its kind is the South of England.
